High-quality Kawajiri Brushes, history of which dates back to the end of the Edo period
The town of Kawajiri has been involved in production of brushes since the end of the Edo period. In 1838, Sanzo KIKUTANI traveled to Arima in the Sesshu province (current Hyogo prefecture) to purchase calligraphy brushes for sale in private elementary schools and other institutions.
Yaekichi Ueno, the founder of Kikyujudou, was encouraged to make calligraphy brushes by Sanzo KIKUTAN, went to Arima in 1850 to obtain the production method by himself, and studied deeply afterward. Hiring craftsmen from Arima and Izumo (Shimane prefecture), he started manufacturing high-quality Kawajiri Brushes, which have been handed down to the present day.
