Matsudaira Yorimoto, the younger brother of Mitsukuni (2nd generation of Mito-Tokugawa clan) established his residence in the second year of Manji (1659).
His son, Yorisada, was given a territory of 20,000 koku (a unit for stipend) and became the feudal lord of Moriyama, Mutsu-no-kuni. He was also appointed as the dean of government school.
Senshu-en is a reminder of the garden which was once part of Matsudaira clan's residence.
