You can make an original “CUP NOODLES” that is one and only in the world! Let’s learn all about instant noodles while experiencing with the five senses!
Since opening in 2011, “CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA” has become familiar to people as a popular spot of Yokohama Minato Mirai.
In recent years, it has become a popular facility visited by over 1 million people per year.
What kind of place is this museum bearing the name of “CUP NOODLES” that people eat not only in Japan, but also all over the world? Now, we are introducing details with photos of the facility.
What kind of place is "CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA"?
“CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA” is the experience-based museum for food education where visitors can learn all about instant ramen while enjoying through various attractions and exhibits. You can learn “Creative Thinking” which was a driving force of a life and inventions of Mr. Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin Food Products, who invented instant ramen for the first time in the World.
Despite its reasonable admission fee at 500 yen for adults (high school age children and younger admitted free), there are a lot of must-see attractions on the premises, which both adults and children can fully enjoy.
Multilingual service available in English, Chinese, and Korean, which allow you to enjoy the museum without stress.
For foreign visitors, a voice guidance system is available to explain the exhibition hall on the second floor and images shown in Momofuku Theater. The system is available in English, Chinese and Korean. (Please apply for it at Ticket Counter on the first floor.)
In addition, “CUPNOODLES MUSEUM voice guidance application” to explain exhibits and attractions with voice and text is available (in Japanese and English) for free of charge only by downloading to a smartphone.
At the Creative Thinking Boxes, one of exhibitions on the second floor, through exhibits like modern arts, you can enjoyably learn six keywords, including “Find hints in all sorts of places” and “Don’t just go with the status quo”, which inspired Momofuku Ando to make creative ideas.
This is the exhibition with a theme of “Find hints in all sorts of places,” where you can actually touch panels. Go there to find out what will happen if you touch them.
In “The Momofuku Ando Story”, the footsteps of Momofuku Ando who devoted all his life to the creation of “foods” is presented in an expansive 58-meter long panorama that combines images at that times and endearing illustrations.
You can learn Momofuku’s life full of ups and downs in which he invented instant noodles with creativity and eagerness while becoming almost penniless at one time.
There is also “Momofuku’s Work Shed” which reproduced the work shed at that time where Momofuku worked on the development of “Chicken Ramen”, the world’s first instant noodles. Inside the narrow shed, tools used for the development have been reproduced. You can actually enter it and feel the atmosphere at that time. The message of this little shed is that even without any special equipment it is possible to create world changing inventions with just ordinary tools as long as there is an idea.
Create your own completely original CUPNOODLES at MY CUPNOODLES Factory!
“MY CUPNOODLES Factory” is the most popular attraction in the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM, in which you can create your own original “CUPNOODLES”.
Even in the weekday morning when we visited there to collect information, the attraction was full of visitors. To participate the attraction, please pick up a numbered ticket for the time slot that you would like to join, which is delivered on a first-come-first-served basis after entering the museum.
* “Admission ticket with ticket for MY CUPNOODLES Factory” available on the following website (only in Japanese)
First of all, you purchase a dedicated cup for 300 yen from the vending machine.
This cup is a familiar “CUPNOODLES” cup, but the log has no color, and nothing is written on the other side.
Using colorful pens on each table, freely design the cup to make an original cup that is one and only in the world.
It is unexpectedly difficult to draw pictures and letters on a curved cup. However, as able to create a thing which nobody have seen, participants spend the longest time in this part to decorate the cup carefully.
There are over 5,000 flavor combinations!?
After completing the satisfactory design, put noodles, soup flavors, and toppings in the cup to finish “CUPNOODLES”.
Four kinds of soup flavors are available: original CUPNOODLES, curry, seafood, and chili tomato. From among 12 kinds of toppings, you can select four kinds.
There are 5,460 flavor combinations. You must be able to make CUPNOODLES which is completely different from marketed products in taste and design.
After choosing your favorite soup flavor and toppings, next is the packaging process. After crimping the aluminum cap with heat and pressure using the dedicated machine, shrink-wrap the cup to make it look like “CUPNOODLES” in the marketplace.
At the end of all the process, blow air into the air package in which the cup is put. Now, your own original “CUPNOODLES” is completed!
Anyway, as it is one and only “CUPNOODLES” in the world, you may feel it is too precious to eat. But, please taste CUPNOODLES exclusively for you with the memories of journey.
Open from 10:00 to 18:00 (last admission 17:30)
Required time: 45 minutes (estimated time to complete the CUPNOODLES)
Actually, you can enjoy a meal too! What is a dessert after the meal?
NOODLES BAZAAR -WORLD NOODLES ROAD-, a food court area, is on the 4th floor of the museum. As this is not just a food court area but also a place full of features of the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM, please be sure to drop by.
In an ambience like an Asian night market, you can eat noodles from all over the world, which Momofuku Ando encountered during his travels in search of the origins of noodles.
For example, this is an Indonesian dish named Mi Goreng.
It tastes like Japanese Yaki-soba (pan-fried noodles), but a little bit sweeter.
Next is Malaysian Laksa. It is said to be a dish fusing Malaysian and Chinese food cultures.
It has a curry flavor, but is not so hot that even children may be able to eat.
All noodles are 300 yen per serving. As they are served in a small-size bowl, you can enjoy comparing a variety of tastes.
After the meal, you should try this.
It is named “CUPNOODLES soft-serve ice cream”.
As expressed by the name, this is CUPNOODLES-flavored soft-serve ice cream with the same toppings as ones in the real CUPNOODLES such as shrimps and eggs.
When asked if it is delicious as soft-serve ice cream, honestly speaking, we just say it is a matter of taste. However, we would like you to experience its mysterious and shocking feelings as if a tongue and a brain were confused by the soft-serve ice cream which has texture of cold soft-serve ice cream but tastes CUPNOODLES.
The Place where every visitor has his/her own way to enjoy
In the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA, there are still more must-see attractions which could not be introduced here.
Adults can learn a lot from Momofuku’s way to live, and children must be able to enjoy experience-based exhibitions and attractions. I felt that the merit of this museum is that both children and adults can enjoy in their own way.
In addition, don’t forget to get souvenirs at a museum shop on the 1st floor.
