Geographically, Niigata consists of sand dunes and inland marshes created by the rivers and the sea In the permanent exhibition area, displays of Niigata's history are presented through actual materials, models, videos and pictures. Wisdom and techniques of olden-days living can be experienced at the “Taiken Hiroba”
“Taiken Hiroba” is a free-of-charge area where children can experience and touch tangible aspects of history. A variety of experience programs and the “Mukashi Box” with items made of straw and cloth that can be touched and played with are provided. ・Shinanogawa Viewing Spot
Across the Shinanogawa, on the opposite shore, is a wharf where the Toki Messe and Sado Kisen Ferries are landed. Enjoy the spectacular view of the Sado Kisen Ferry boat crossing the Shinanogawa.

At night, the premises’ buildings are brilliantly lit up. Apart from the historic sites, the museum premises are open for visitors to walk around, even at night.
