Things to know about Capsule Hotels
"Capsule hotel" is literally a hotel like a capsule. Originally capsule hotels were started as a nap space for a businessman who missed the last train. Unlike a regular hotel, you cannot have a room with a bath or a toilet, but it is like a dormitory with bunk beds, or like a sleeping car. It rents a personal space cheaply for sleeping only; use it as a place for sleeping and a nap. Shower (big bath in some cases) and toilet are shared.
Compared with the dormitory where there are only capsules and many beds lined up in large rooms, privacy is well protected. A dedicated TV, a charging space for electronic equipment, and various other things are arranged compactly in a narrow space, and it seems that tours and the like intentionally come to experience this capsule hotel, saying "It seems to be very like Japan."
For one thing, as a point that may cause anxiety in some people, this capsule hotel is not strictly admitted as a hotel, so there is no lock on the personal space. However, in most capsule hotels, there is a key for the place to store your valuables. In many cases, men's and women's floors are separated, so even if a woman uses it by herself, there is a sense of security, but on a couple’s trip it may be a bit lonely.
Capsule hotels evolved diversely now for every generation who wants to travel cheaply and can be used for changing clothes and sleeping. There are various forms, such as a powder room which can be used comfortably even by a woman, a capsule hotel with a large public bath like a spa, and a small but cozy hotel which imitates the first class section of an airplane.
On the other hand, some old-fashioned capsule hotels still serve mainly male customers, and women may not be able to stay. Security is generally good anywhere in Japan, but some capsule hotels are located in so-called red light districts. When considering a capsule hotel as a place of accommodation, the atmosphere can be predicted depending on where it is located, so it is important to check beforehand.
