Japanese Alps, Mt. Kasa
The highest peak entirely within Gifu Prefecture
The Japanese alps are moutains symbolic of all Japan, and among them the highest peak entirely within Gifu Prefecture is Mt. Kasa. This beautiful peak appears balanced as though covered with a shade, and has long been an object of worship, having been sanctified by the Buddhist priest Enku Shonin in the 1600s. Trails up the mountain start near the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway Station in Oku Hida Onsen-go, which is famous for its hot springs. Following the forest trail on the left side of the Kamata River leads to the trailhead. This route is known for its steep slopes, but if you climb step by step towards the top and look at the range stretching from Mt. Yarigatake to Mt. Hotaka, you will feel the peaks up close and forget your fatigue. With a 360° panorama from the peak, you can enjoy an excellent view of th eJapanese alps, especially Mt. Yarigatake and Mt. Hotaka which spread before the eyes like a folding screen.
