Traveling in domestic flights
Japan is an oblong country that spans about 3000 km from north to south. Therefore, if you are incorporating distant areas such as Hokkaido and Okinawa into your travel plan, you might have to use airplanes even when traveling within Japan. When traveling domestically by airplane, it is necessary first to investigate which airline company is operating the desired route in a day. That’s because various airlines provide flights and you can choose from numerous time slots in case of Hokkaido and Okinawa, but in case of minor airports, you can only choose from few routes per day. Depending on the region, there are also seasonal nonstop flights.
Depending on the location, domestic flight airports vary in level of quality. There are big airports such as “Shin-Chitose Airport” of Hokkaido where souvenir shops cover roughly all the specialties of Hokkaido, while some local airports have very simple kiosk and seats in a lobby where only one to two flights arrive per day.
There is not much to worry about going to the city from the airport, since limousine buses are operating at almost all airports in accordance with the arrival of the flight. However, the number of service and frequency also vary widely depending on the location, and from major airports like Haneda Airport, several bus companies provide numerous limousine buses traveling to various districts around Tokyo, as well as medium-range local buses such as Chiba and Shizuoka; on the other hand, at local airports, if you miss an airport bus operated according to the flight of an airplane, you will lose the means of travel other than taxis and you may feel inconvenient, so be careful. Airport limousine bus tickets can be purchased at the airport without reservation.
Lastly, let us explain about LCCs (Low Cost Carriers), in which the number of people using LCCs has increased sharply even for domestic trips recently. LCCs are cheap flights which you can travel in casually as if taking high-speed buses, and the ticket can be purchased from one-way. Representative domestic flights include Peach, Vanilla Air, Jetstar, Skymark, etc. Some of you from Asian countries might have used these flights to come to Japan. Although LCCs are convenient in using for unexpected trips and above all, cheap, there are also risks of delay and cancellation. We recommend taking advantage of the LCCs considering the length of your stay and the flexibility of the trip.
