Hondo (main hall) of Kokubun-ji Temple
Kokubun-ji Temple, which was founded by the high priest Gyoki in 746, is the greatest ancient temple in this region. Its stately hondo, which exhibits the excellent techniques of Hidanotakumi carpenters, was constructed in the mid-Muromachi Period.
Housed inside the main hall are a statue of Mokkaku Daimyojin, a master-sculptor of the Muromachi Period, who had excellent techniques for woodcarving and karakuri (Japanese traditional mechanical dolls), and a statue of Fujiwara Muneyasu, the first carpenter in Hida, who was granted a juryomei (honorary title), and Hida Gon no Kami (Deputy Governor of Hida Province), the highest rank as a craftsman.
